Abstract:
The incidence of cancer increases with advanced age and the majority of cancer deaths are in patients aged ≥ 65 years. The geriatric population is a heterogeneous group and a patient's chronologic age does not always correlate with underlying physiologic status.Oncologists need to be able to obtain information on physiologic and functional capacity in older patients in order to provide safe and effective recommendations. The comprehensive geriatric assessment conducts comprehensive assessment of many aspects of health and well-being of an elderly patient including medical, functional, nutritional, psychiatric and behavioral issues and needs as well as family and social support.Several studies have suggested a wide range of possible benefits from using comprehensive geriatric assessment in elderly patients with cancer. These include detecting problems not found by routine history and physical examination in the initial evaluation, predicting severe treatment-related toxicity, estimating overall survival in a variety of tumors and treatment settings, assisting in cancer treatment decisions.
