Abstract:
Objective:To compare health-related quality of life in patients with rectal cancer treated with different sphincter-preserving strategies. Methods:From March 21,2024 to April 15,2024,95 patients with low rectal cancer who had received surgical or non-surgical sphincter-preserving therapy and had finished the treatment were recruited through the platform of Zhejiang Cancer Hospital.Global health status, defecation control function and male erectile function were evaluated by the EuroQol Five Dimensions Questionnaire,Wexner incontinence score and International Index of Erectile Function.Aggregated survey data were analyzed via Microsoft Excel software and SPSS (Version 26.0).Count data were represented as frequency and constituent ratio. The measurement data were expressed as average scores, and Mann-Whitney U test was used for comparison between groups. The comparison of categorical variables between groups was performed using χ2 test.P<0.05 was considered statistically significant.Results:95 valid questionnaires were collected. The global health status, defecation control function reported by patients in the Watch & Wait group were better than those in the sphincter-preserving surgery after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy group, and there were statistical differences. There was no significant difference in male erectile function between the groups. Conclusion:The Watch & Wait strategy was associated with better global health status and defecation control function than sphincter-preserving surgery after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy.Discussing health-related quality of life after treatment with different sphincter-preserving strategies is helpful for both doctors and patients to make a better treatment decision.
