Abstract:
Objective:To explore the correlation between carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and metabolic syndrome (MS).Methods:A cohort was constructed based on the physical examination population of employees in Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital in 2012 (October 2012 to February 2013).Demographic characteristics,body mass index (BMI),CEA,MS and their component indexes were collected through questionnaire survey,physical examination and laboratory testing.They were followed up at the physical examination every year.They were followed up until 2023.They were grouped into quartiles according to CEA baseline level to calculate the cumulative incidence rate of MS in different gender,different CEA baseline level and total physical examination population.Whether MS was taken as the outcome indicator and CEA level as the observation index,after adjusting for confounding factors,Cox proportional hazard regression model was constructed to analyze the relationship between CEA level and MS incidence.Results:All the subjects were followed up for 41 163 years,with a median follow-up of 8 years.During the follow-up period,680 cases of MS occurred,with an incidence rate of 15.3%.There were significant differences in age,marital status,smoking,physical exercise,BMI,fasting blood glucose (FPG),systolic blood pressure (SBP),diastolic blood pressure (DBP),triglyceride (TG) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) among physical examination groups with different CEA levels (all P<0.05).The incidence rate of MS,overweight/obesity,elevated blood sugar,blood pressure and incidence rate of dyslipidemia all increased with the increase of CEA four level group (χ2 trends were 254.837,108.578,239.517,401.974 and 97.125,all P<0.001).Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression model analysis showed that the RR value of MS in the physical examination population in the 2nd,3rd and 4th quartile groups increased with the increase of CEA level.After adjusting for gender,age and other confounding factors,the aRR value still increased with the increase of CEA level,and the difference was statistically significant (all P<0.01).Conclusion:There is a correlation between CEA and MS,with the increase of CEA level,the risk of MS increases.
