Abstract:
The role of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) as a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system and a motor regulator in the gastrointestinal tract has been well established, and its role in the occurrence of various cancers is under investigation.5-HT can activate the PI3K/AKT pathway,MAPK pathway,JAK/STAT pathway,Wnt pathway through different receptors and mechanisms, promote cell proliferation and migration, and mediate anti-tumor immune responses.A variety of enzymes in its metabolic pathways are highly expressed in a variety of tumors, which is a potential target for tumor treatment. In recent years, metabolic disorders of 5-HT have been found in a variety of tumors, including colorectal cancer, liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, etc. Therefore, the research on 5-HT metabolism is of great significance in tumor treatment. This review systematically summarizes the relationship between 5-HT and cancer and the research progress, and elucidates the scientific basis for 5-HT as a potential new cancer treatment target, which provides new ideas for the development of drugs targeting the enzymes, metabolites or receptors of 5-HT metabolic pathway.
