Abstract:
Objective:To investigate the clinicopathological features and prognosis of gastric cancer (GC) in young patients (≤35 years old). Methods:The clinicopathological data of 75 young patients (≤35 years old) and 1 954 older patients (>35 years old, control group) undergoing radical gastrectomy for stage Ⅰ-Ⅲ GC in Hunan Cancer Hospital from October 2010 to December 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. The difference of demographic characteristics, pathological results and long term survival between the two groups were compared by χ2 or t test (for categorical or continuous variables),or Kaplan-Meier method,Log-rank test and Cox proportional hazard regression analysis (for prognosis). Results:The mean age of the 75 young patients was 30.13 (19~35) years old, with a slight female predominance (53.3%).Compared with the older patients, young GC patients had a higher rate of female, higher pre-operative albumin level, lower proportions of comorbidities and post-operative complications, shorter post-operative hospital stays, but more likelihood of receiving neo-adjuvant and adjuvant chemotherapy (all P<0.05).The 1-,3- and 5-year survival rates of the young patients were 94.6%,60.1% and 54.2%,which were comparable with those in the control group (89.3%,67.7% and 58.1%,P=0.601).Further analysis showed that pathological tumor stage was the main risk factor for prognosis of the young GC patients. Conclusion:GC in young patients trends to be female predominant.Given early detection, receiving radical gastrectomy and adjuvant chemotherapy, the prognosis of young GC patients is comparable with that in older patients.
