Abstract:
Objective:To investigate the efficacy and side effects of capecitabine maintenance chemotherapy after the first-line chemotherapies for patients with advanced gastric cardiac adenocarcinoma (GCA).Methods:A total of 82 patients with advanced GCA who responded clinically to first-line chemotherapies were divided into maintenance group and observation group.The maintenance group (39 cases) received chemotherapy with capecitabine (1 000 mg/m2 twice daily for 14 days,21 days/cycle),and the observation group (43 cases) with clinical follow-up.Results:The differences of objective response rate were not significant（P=0.505）between two groups during the follow-up.The median time of progression was 9.0 months in the maintenance group and 6.5 months in the observation group (P=0.001).The median overall survivals were 17 and 12.5 months in maintenance group and observation group respectively (P＜0.001).The common side effects occurred in the patients of maintenance group included myelo-suppression,gastrointestinal reaction,fatigue,hand-foot syndrome,peripheral nerve toxicity and stomatitis.There was statistically significant only in hand-foot syndrome before and after treatment in maintenance group (P=0.001).Conclusion:Capecitabine maintenance therapy could significantly prolong progression free survival and overall survival in advanced GCA patients with patients responding first-line chemotherapies.
